CATEGORY: Indicator · For NinjaTrader 8 · Footprint (bid/ask grid per bar)

HOW IT WORKS: It replaces each candle with a grid: at every price level within the bar's traded range, it displays the volume executed against the bid (aggressive selling) and against the ask (aggressive buying)—showing not just OHLC data, but a complete breakdown of where and on which side the market moved. From this grid, it calculates the following, bar by bar:

  • Delta per cell and per bar — buys minus sells, both at the price level and as a total.
  • Bar Point of Control (POC) — the level with the highest executed volume within that specific bar.
  • Diagonal imbalance — compares aggressive volume at a level against that of the adjacent level on the opposite side (the industry-standard comparison), using a configurable threshold (defaulting to 300% or 3:1).
  • Stacked imbalances — three or more consecutive unbalanced levels on the same side; a reading the industry considers more significant than an isolated imbalance.
  • Absorption — high aggressive volume at the bar's extreme that failed to drive the price in that direction (an intra-bar heuristic—explicitly labeled as such—rather than the full multi-bar definition).
  • Unfinished auction — a bar extreme heavily weighted to one side, signaling that activity was cut off abruptly rather than tapering off.
  • Institutional Context Score (0-100) — combines the three previous readings into a single number, displayed on the HUD alongside an explicit disclaimer that it is not a confirmed entry signal.

Regarding the reliability of "institutional signals": the industry often treats stacked imbalances and absorption as indicators of institutional activity; however, EKAITRADING has not independently validated these claims, and external evidence is mixed—one independent analysis found that the imbalance signal's Sharpe ratio worsens as the threshold increases, which is the exact opposite of the standard sales narrative. BMFootprint presents these readings as context for past events, never as a confirmation of future price action.

Key differentiator: a proprietary delta engine (utilizing a secondary tick series + real-time data) that does not rely on NinjaTrader’s Order Flow+ license or its native Volumetric Bars—the same approach used by BMCumulativeDelta, BMChart, BMVolumeProfile, and BMTPO.

Note on chart candles: BMFootprint draws its grid over the price panel; it does not automatically hide NinjaTrader’s native candles (this is a platform limitation, not an indicator flaw—it has been confirmed that no indicator can reliably achieve this via its own code). For a completely clean view, there are two options at no extra cost: set the candle colors to "Transparent" in the chart properties, or pair it with BMChart Style if you already own it.

TARGET AUDIENCE: Traders who need to see—bar by bar—not just whether buying or selling dominated, but the exact price levels where that aggressive activity occurred. It allows you to read absorption, stacked imbalances, and actual volume concentration with the same level of detail found in native footprint tools on order-flow-licensed platforms, but without the cost of that license.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: NinjaTrader 8. Any instrument with tick data. Accurate historical bid/ask breakdown requires Tick Replay. Without it, the footprint functions normally in real-time, and historical bars lacking that data are explicitly marked as "n/d" (no data) instead of displaying an approximation disguised as actual data.
